The Governor of Rivers State Siminalayi Fubara has suspended the Chairman Caretaker Committee of Akuku-Toru Local Government Area, Otonye Briggs with immediate, and as at the time of filing this report no reason was given for the suspension.
Penpushing reports that the Governor’s spokesperson, Nelson Chukwudi, made this known on Tuesday in a statement adding that the Governor has directed Hon Bitebobo Amiee to immediately take over as chairman
‘The Governor has directed Hon Bitebobo Amiee to immediately take over as chairperson. Mr Briggs is hereby directed to hand over all council property in his possession to the (new) Caretaker Committee Chairperson’, the statement said.
Penpushing further reports that Briggs, a lawyer, was among those inaugurated by Fubara in June as chairmen of the caretaker committee for the 23 local government areas of the state, while their inauguration followed the expiration of the three-year tenure of the former elected council officials in the state.
The inauguration of the caretaker committee triggered violence in the state between supporters of the Governor and those of his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who is the minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Penpushing also reports that record has it that the elected officials, backed by former Governor (Wike), had refused to vacate office, prompting a clash with Fubara’s supporters that resulted in the death of two persons, including a police officer.
The police authorities following the violence since June directed operatives to take over the 23 council secretariats, and Briggs in his three months in office did not operate from his official office as the secretariat is still occupied by the police.
