Literacy is the ability to read and write. This is a simple and concise definition, and it’s the competence or knowledge in a specified area of skill.

The reading aspect of it, interests me a great deal and a lot with advocacy concern. Knowledge has been buried in book a very long time and that’s where it resides but technology has also exhumed part of it, recreate, expose and exhibit in different ways of knowledge media.

IT revolutionalised all facets of life, touched it and reformed them through ICT to present reading of information outside book format in lot easier and accessible styles than physical books.

Notwithstanding, Book remains indelible and the most wonderful invention of printing, according to the Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka at the maiden edition of SixthSense Summer Children Reading Camp, 2018.

Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4) is the education goal. It aims to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.”

With this; literacy is fundalmental, basic and compulsory, not only to a child but the society. An informed society will enjoy from far-reaching decisions and human development through policies and procedures at all levels of Administrations.

A dedicated day by UN to literacy is to reiterate the need to quality pre-primary education, to encourage its delivery and provision of well-trained educators because of its importance to all and sundry.

Literacy Day, an awaken call for all to get out of the woods and illuminate the light of knowledge through civilization. To read and write is a great tool to increase human capacity, development and potentials to the benefits of all races.

Another awareness point is that many don’t know they’re in the darkness of life with inadequate knowledge and incompetence. To be able to read and write is not only through tertiary but quality basic education of early childhood development and care.

I say, “light your surroundings with knowledge, today is Literacy Day”

Abiodun Oladimeji Lasile is the founder of The SixthSense Initiative
