The Ogun State Government in swift response to Penpushing media report exposing management of a petrol station in Abeokuta for exploiting motorists to pay extra charge on old naira notes before selling products to them, has issued warning to all fuel stations with such habits to desist of face the full wrath of the law.

Penpushing reports that the Governor gave the warning on Sunday while addressing party faithful, emphasizing that there was no reason for rejection of the old naira notes, following the Supreme Court judgement extending the legality of the old naira notes till December 31, 2023

The Governor added that the warning does not exempt every merchants, traders and bankers, stressing that any of the establishments found doing contrary to the order may have their outlets sealed, and deal with the fullest extent of the law

‘I am hereby sounding a note of warning to every Merchant, Trader, Banker, Petrol Station that is refusing old naira notes.  If you’re reported to me, I will deal with you to the fullest extent of the law.The Supreme Court of Nigeria is the highest Court of the land and it has ruled that the old naira notes remains a legal tender up until December 31st, 2023’, he emphasised.

Penpushing further reports that it was exclusively reported that the management of Abeokuta Petrol station, Divine Park Gas and Oil located in Idi-Aba area of Abeokuta, Ogun State Capital has introduced exploitation into sales of the products with condition that customers with old naira notes will have to pay extra charge to buy the products

The investigation conducted by Penpushing media revealed that the said fuel station known to have been selling a litre at N250 on offer of new notes by customers, has however, introduced a new ploy to exploit customers and now sell the products at N300 per litre.

Penpushing also reports that any customers with the old notes are now asked to buy a litre of fuel at N300 per litre, while those with new notes has to pay N250 per litre, a difference of  additional N50 , an extra cost to get the products.

The seven-member panel of the Supreme Court led by Justice John Okoro has extended the validity of the N200, N500, and N1, 000 notes for next ten months which is to last till 31 December, 2023, and unanimously directed that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) must continue to receive the old notes from Nigerians

Penpushing reports that the court held that the directive of President Muhammadu Buhari for the redesign of the new notes and withdrawal of the old notes without due consultation is invalid, while a member of the panel, Justice Emmanuel Agim who read the lead judgement, equally condemned the President’s disobedience of the court’s 8 February order that the old N200, N500, and N1, 000 notes should continue to circulate alongside the new ones.

The panel pointed out that  the president’s broadcast of 16 February that only N200 notes should remain legal tender made Nigeria’s democracy look like a mere pretension while democracy is replaced with autocracy.
