The wife of former Deputy Senate President of Nigeria, Beatrice Ekweremadu who was convicted by the United Kingdom Court in March 2023, alongside her husband, Ike Ekweremadu, and Dr Obinna Obeta of organ trafficking has been released from the prison.

Penpushing reports that it is recalled that after a six-week trial at the Old Bailey, the trio were found guilty of facilitating the travel of a young man to Britain with a view to his exploitation, while Ekweremadu was later sentenced to nine years and eight months in prison, his wife bagged four years and six months jail term.

The former aide of former Deputy Senate President of Nigeria, who doesn’t want his name in print was quoted to have confirmed the release of wife of his former boss, however, going by the pronouncement of the United Kingdom court, Beatrice has not completed her jail term which was four years and six months.

Penpushing further reports that as at the time of filing this report it was unclear for if she was granted pardon in the European country, just as the former aide of Ekeremadu said he has no information in regard such

“Yes. She’s released now. She is currently in Nigeria. I don’t have that information. But she’s out means she’s out finally. She will not go back to the UK,” the former aide said.

Penpushing also reports that the Ekweremadus’ conviction was the first under the United Kingdom (UK’s) Modern Slavery Act 2015, and the sentencing comes after pleas from multiple prominent personalities and institutions, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The sources, however, disclosed that the woman has returned to Nigeria adding that there has been jubilation going on in her family house in the Mpu community of Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State as at the time of this report.
