Egbu Old Girls Association (EGOGA) has concluded plans to build the first phase of its over N300 million modern dormitory for the school, which is designed ahead of the association’s 3rd global reunion scheduled to hold between the 18th and 21st of December

Penpushing reports that a statement by the association Global Public Relations Office Ugonma Cokey disclosed that the groundbreaking ceremony was conducted by the Rt Rev Bishop Geoffrey Okorafor, who is also the proprietor of the school.

The statement added that the ceremony was witnessed by some executive members of the association, including, Lady Barrister Stella Amamasi, Hon Justice Vicky Isiguzo, Barrister Ethel Echebima.

Penpushing further reports that others are Dame Irene Duru and Lady Kalaya Opara, the principal who is also an old girl, her staff, and some staff and students of the school.

The statement explained that the building of the modern dormitory is part of the association’s way of giving back to the school, and will also ensure better security, accommodation, and environment for the students and to encourage more students to become borders.

The Global President Mrs Ijeoma Enekwa, in her remarks pointed out that if inspite of the dilapidated buildings, the students still win international competitions, there’s no telling what they will do with good dormitories, environment and ambience.

Penpushing also reports that it would be recalled that at its 2nd reunion, when it celebrated 60 years of the school, the association produced a compendium to raise money for the dormitory, stressing that old students did a survey of the dormitory compound

The statement stated that ahead of its first reunion, the group did a perimeter fencing of the dormitory area, to secure the girls, adding that individuals built a signage and gate, as well as wash bathrooms and toilets.

Penpushing reports that the Global Public Relations Officer stated that class sets built a kitchen, bought lab equipment, mattresses, and water tanks and chapters donated as notebooks and other materials.

The statement added that a few months ago, the North American Chapter of the association renovated a classroom block, assuring that plans are underway to equip the classes, adding that the association hopes to raise more money before and at the reunion to help with the completion of the dormitory before embarking on the 2nd phase.

Penpushing further reports that the Global President encouraged individuals that they can take up the building of a chalet and brand it in their name or the name of a family member.”

The statement explained that global reunion, which holds every 3 years, features the Winifred Hubbard lectures, and the lecture was instituted in honour of Winifred Hubbard, the school’s first principal.

The theme for this year’s reunion is “Mentorship For Girl Child Safety And Empowerment”, while members of the association include the first female stockbroker in Nigeria, Mrs Lizzy Ebi, the publisher of The Source Magazine, Dame Comfort Obi, the former first lady of Ondo State, Her Excellency, Mrs Betty Anyanwu- Akeredolu, Hon. Justice Vicky Ishigugo and other notable figures from all works of life, both home and in the diaspora.
