Traders in metropolis of Abeokuta, Ogun State Capital have lamented the worsening state of the country’s economy which is affecting their business in the town and environs, as established interview conducted randomly across some markets.
Penpushing reports that some of the notable markets visited with similar experiences include Lafenwa, Omida, Kuto, Iberekodo, Elega, Itoku, Sapon, Isabo and Gbangba in Iyana Mortuary area of the ancient town among others.
The findings showed that patronage and sales have dropped due to the hardship, which has affected customers purchasing power, with number of customers said to always avoid even going to the markets these days
Penpushing further reports that a trader at Lafenwa market who identified herself as Oluwatomisin Ademola in an interview affirmed that this situation is unbearable for traders in the local market, as she pleaded with the government to provide solutions to the harsh economy.
‘Sales have not been going smoothly for the past few months, the rice that we bought for N30,000 is now N65,000. Government should do something about it as customers cannot buy garri again because it’s now sold at N2,000 per kongo’, she stated.
The worried female trader pointed out that customers no longer buy goods again because of the high price, adding that whenever they heard of sudden change in prices they immediately turn back and ignored buying goods.
