The Iyalode of Yorubaland, Iyalode Alaba Lawson has called on women not to see themselves as weaker vessels in nation building as being believed in some quarters.

Penpushing reports that, she gave the charge while speaking at the maiden annual conference of National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ),B Zone with the theme ’Insecurity: The Girl-Child as Endangered Species’, held at Radisson Blu Hotel, Lagos State.

The Women leader in South-West represented by Mrs Norah Hollins and Mrs Dorcas James pointed out that women played major roles in the society, hence, need to accord them the honour in all ramifications

Penpushing further reports that, Lawson emphasised that women should be seen as partners in progress with male counterparts for the betterment of the society at large.

‘When you build a woman, you have built a nation. This is a fact, and records are also there to buttress this claim. It is also necessary that, women should not see themselves as weak vessels, as always being said in some quarters’, Lawson stated

Penpushing also reports that, she declared that she is proud to the associated with women journalists, having been with them for over two decades

‘Down memory lane, I have been part and parcel of the association since inception which is over two decades, and I am proud to say that, I have always been pleased with the roles played by the women professionals in the field of journalism in the country’, Lawson added.

‘Confidently, women can perform creditably well in any position of authorities, we have them doing well in various fields, which include governance, and this always bring relative peace, while examples are numerous’, she noted.

Penpushing reports that, Lawson noted that, the leadership of women has always been successful, pointing out that there are women as Presidents, and heads of various political offices, institutions and  organizations and doing well

‘I want to use this opportunity again, to call on women to serve as comrades of unity among themselves, let us diffuse the notions that women are enemies of themselves, when there are opportunities for them to get to the top. In Unity lies strength.

The Iyalode said the topic for the conference was timely considering ugly development being recorded in Nigeria, and other nations, which include sexual abuse, child molestation, rape, killings, kidnapping and maiming among others.

‘It is the girl child that grows into adolescence of womanhood. Therefore she must be guarded jealously. It is sad that, girl-child remains the most vulnerable, hence, the need for women to rise up in unison and jointly fight the maltreatment and injustice, which have become the order of the day in our society and worrisome development’.

‘We should also, therefore  have it in our minds that, there is need to support the Sustainable Development Goal(SDG) 5, which seeks that women and girls everywhere must have equal rights and opportunities and be able to live free of violence and discrimination’.

Penpushing further reports that, Lawson called on the organisers of the laudable conference on need to come out with a communiqué at the end of the event, and should see the conference as regular

‘I also want to encourage our women journalists, at the end of this conference, the need to come out with a detailed and strong communiqué to be forwarded to the appropriate authorities, emphasizing on the protection of women across the country, and take note every human being are products of women, and therefore women deserves no maltreatment or discrimination’, she added.
