The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has dragged former Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha before Federal Court in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) over alleged stealing of N2.9 billion from public coffers.

Penpushing reports that, Okorocha, a serving senator was charged on Monday for conspiring with All Progressives Congress (APC) politician and others, as well as five companies to commit the crime

The other defendants include Anyim Nyerere Chinenye, Naphtali International Limited, Perfect Finish Multi Projects Limited, Consolid Projects Consulting Limited, Pramif International Limited, and Legend World Concepts Limited.

Penpushing further reports that, Okorocha and Nyerere are facing 17 charges, as they were fingered in laundering of the money said to belong to the state and local government areas, a crime which contravenes money laundering Act 2011

The charge sheet indicated that the stolen funds were diverted between October 2014 and February 2016 from the Imo State Government House account and Imo State Joint Local Government Project account.

Penpushing also reports that, the charges against Okoroccha and his alleged co-travellers in the alleged crime were filed at a period when the 59 year old former Governor declared his intention to run for the office of the President in 2023.

The accused Okorocha  was a two-term Governor of Imo State, and won a controversial election under the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress(APC), to become a senator, while the returning officer alleged he was forced to declare Okorocha the winner under duress, hence, the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) delay issuing him a certificate of return.
