The Nigerian Government has declared that continued violations of coronavirus protocols and guidelines by the citizens and residents, attributed to daily high increase of the cases may lead to fresh lockdown in the country/
Penpushing reports that President Muhammed Buhari gave the option and warning in a statement on Sunday issued by his Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, pointing that relatively high cases of the coronavirus infection is alarming and worrisome.
The presidency in the statement indicated that the government is reluctant to lock down the country because many citizens will not have food on the table without venturing out for their day-to-day business.
“The Buhari administration is most reluctant to lock down the country and continues to emphasize the non-pharmaceutical measures and the only way to avert lockdowns is to observe these measures as put in place by the Presidential Task Force’, the statement reads.
“Nigerians have come a long way from the dreaded lockdown and the administration is unhappy about any prospects of bringing it back as many citizens will not have food on the table without venturing out on a day-to-day business.”
Penpushing further reports that, the government expressed worry that the coronavirus pandemic is a threat to the population and the national economy, adding, ‘protecting public health is one of the sacred duties of any responsible government and the administration will not abdicate that responsibility.”
The President in the statement appealed to Nigerians to give their maximum cooperation for the success of the policy. Emphasizing the importance of wearing of face masks, washing of hands regularly with soap and clean water, and practising social distancing are parts of the non-pharmaceutical interventions in place to limit the spread of the virus.
Penpushing also reports that, as at the time of filing this report on Saturday, the data of the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) showed that the virus has claimed 1,578 lives in the country
