The Lagos State Government has ordered the indefinite closure of Dowen College located in Lekki area of the state, following controversies surrounding the death of a 12-year-old student, Sylvester Oromoni Jnr

Penpushing reports that it is recalled that the deceased parents had insisted that Sylvester was violently abused by senior students of the school for allegedly refusing to join a secret cult in the school.

The government in response to the uproar, on Friday in a statement by Assistant Director, Public Affairs Unit of the Ministry of Education, Ganiu Lawal declared that the school remained closed pending outcome of investigation into the death

Penpushing further reports that, Lawal explained that the Commissioner for Education, Folasade Adefisayo, made the announcement after a meeting with the School Management and Staff, adding that the commissioner called for calm, with assurance anybody found wanting would not be spared

“The Lagos State Government has ordered the indefinite closure of Dowen College, Lekki , pending the outcome of an investigation into the death of Sylvester Oromoni Jnr, a student of the school,” the statement reads in part, adding that; “The commissioner called for calm, saying no effort will be spared in getting to the root of the incident.”

Penpushing also reports that, the ministry had earlier condoled the bereaved family and pledged commitment to unravel the mystery surrounding the controversial death, having visited the school on Thursday, while the officials of the ministry were conducted round the facilities including the academic and hostel areas.

The school management, however consistently denied the existence of a cult group on the campus, adding that the information at its disposal was that the student was injured while playing football.

Penpushing reports that, contrary to the claim by the college management, cousin of the late student,  Perrison Oromoni, on Wednesday  had taken to social media to call out the names of some students of the school whom he accused of being responsible for the harassment and the eventual death of the junior secondary school student.

The deceased cousin on his Twitter handle @Perrisonoromoni narrated how the boy was allegedly battered on Friday, November 26 at the school before he eventually died on Tuesday, November 3.

Penpushing further reports that, Oromoni disclosed that a series of tests and X-rays conducted on the late student showed that he sustained internal injuries from beatings he received from the students.
