The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has ordered that Libya’s national team will forfeit three points to Nigeria’s Super Eagles, and also pay a fine, over maltreatment on the team in Libya, which resulted in the botched Nations Cup qualifier between the two countries scheduled for Tuesday, October 15, 2024
Penpushing reports that it is recalled that the Nigerian team resolved not to proceed with the encounter after their flight into Benghazi from Kano was diverted to Al-Abraq International Airport without prior notification, where the Super Eagles players and crew were kept waiting for over 12 hours.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) Disciplinary Board in its ruling pointed out that Libya violated African Cup of Nations (AFCON) Regulations and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Disciplinary Code —specifically Articles 31, 82, and 151- CAF, and therefore declared the match forfeited by Libya and awarded Nigeria a 3-0 victory.
Penpushing further reports that Confederation of African Football (CAF) in similar development in its ruling fined the Libya Football Federation $50,000, with payment required within 60 days, however, this decision strengthens Nigeria’s position as Group D leader with 10 points from four games.
The ruling also underlines Confederation of African Football (CAF) commitment to fair play and sportsmanship; hence, it significantly influences the Group D standings, as Nigeria remains on top with 10 points.
Penpushing also reports that Super Eagles is followed by Benin with six points from four games, while Libya is at the bottom with one point, whole the top two teams in each group advance to the 24-team finals in Morocco next year.
