The Community and religious leaders have converged on Ijebu-Ode town of Ogun State for a town hall meeting to address the increasing rate of gender-based violence which is almost becoming a menace in the society.
Penpushing reports that the meeting held on Tuesday was organized by the Centre for Women’s Health and Information to seek collaboration with other stakeholders against Gender Based Violence (GBV)
The meeting condemned increasing rate of gender-based violence and equally called for collective efforts to address the issue through awareness, sensitization and stronger institutions.
Penpushing further reports that a community leader Olu Akinsanya, advised citizens to come together and work for proper implementation of laws, reduce social vices, and increase education of people about the protection of their rights, especially the rights of women and girls in our society.
The representative of the Federation of Muslim Women Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN) Kudirat Rabiu, in her submission called for the promotion of good value systems that encourage good behavior and urged traditional and religious leaders to shun sentiments and allow proper prosecution of offenders.
Penpushing also reports that Executive Director of Centre for Women’s Health and Information (CEWHIN), Atinuke Odukoya explained that the Non-Governmental Organisation believe that with proper attention and adequate sensitization, people will be more conscious of the protection of the rights of women, girls, and other vulnerable groups in the society
Meanwhile, the participants agreed to work with necessary agencies and groups to reduce cases of violence against women and girls in their society, as they promised to take the campaigns to the grassroots.
