Cleric killed while calling Muslims to prayer in Kano

A Muslim cleric identified as Ladan Zubairu, has been killed while calling Muslim worshippers to prayer at Yusuf Garko Mosque in the Maraba Quarters area of Kano town, in Kano state on Monday morning.

Penpushing reports that the, the deceased’s son, Isa Kasim, confirmed the incident, explaining that his father had gone out at dawn to call Muslims to prayer, adding that after making the first call, his father usually sat briefly to recite supplications before the second call.

“He had just finished the first call and was seated when someone entered the mosque with a weapon, grabbed him and slaughtered him. In short, his throat was slit,” Kasim lamented.

Penpushing further reports that the bereaved son added that following the attack, some youths in the area mobilised gave the attacked a hot chase before he was subsequently killed.

The son of the murdered elderly man disclosed that after the assailant was killed, residents discovered the cleric’s severed throat wrapped in a nylon bag inside the suspect’s pocket.

Penpushing also reports that sources, disclosed that after the assailant was apprehended and lynched to death by angry mob his residence was set ablaze, causing panic in the area before security personnel restored order.

The Kano State Police Command Public Relations Officer Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, confirming the incident said officers quickly intervened to restore calm and prevent further escalation, adding that normalcy has returned.

Penpushing reports that he stated that the police recovered both bodies and transported them to the Mohammed Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital for autopsy, adding that the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident.

The statement said authorities have appealed to residents to remain calm and provide any information that may assist the ongoing investigation, emphasizing that the command is committed to ensuring that anyone found culpable will face the full force of the law.
