Civil Society Organization (CSOs), comprising of the Socialist Party of Nigeria (SPN), Joint Action Forum (JAF), and All Workers Convergence (AWC) on Thursday tackled President Muhammadu Buhari over postponement of fuel subsidy removal.
Penpushing reports that the Acting National Chairman of Social Party of Nigeria(SPN), Comrade Abiodun Bamigboye while speaking on behalf of the civil societies urged labour leaders and activists not to relent but to brainstorm on how to utilize the temporary retreat of the government and win more concessions for the working masses and oppressed youth.
The group converging in front of the University of Ibadan in a protest to show their displeasure carried placards with various inscriptions such as “No fuel increase”, “build government owned refineries”, “employment is a right” and “provide job for the youth” among others.
Penpushing further reports that, the Civil Society Organization (CSOs), stated that the postponement of the removal of the subsidy was not equal to ending the policy of subsidy removal, saying that it was just a mere shift of the nations evil day.
The Nigerian Government, it is recalled through the Minister of Finance, Budget and Economic Planning, Zainab Ahmed, announced the postponement of the planned removal of subsidy on petroleum products till further notice.
Penpushing also reports that, the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, called on labour to suspend its planned protests on January 27 and February 21st describing it as unnecessary, while the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) during its National Executives Council(NEC) emergency meeting decided to comply.
The demands of the civil societies include: reduction of the prices of diesel, kerosene and cooking gas, reversal of electricity tariff to N12 per Kilowatt and re nationalization of power sector under democratic control of workers and consumers.
Penpushing reports that,others demands are: none imposition of taxes and levies on the working people, an end to neo-liberal policies of deregulation, privatization, commercialization, and adequate funding and democratic management of public education and health care among others.
The Coordinator of All Workers Convergence (AWC), Adrew Emelese said that Nigerians has lost hope in the present administration, saying that the government is only deceiving the masses, and called on the people to take their destiny in their hands and come out en mass to reject the hardship government has imposed on them.
