The Nigerian Government has rejected Sunday’s military coup  in Guinea which toppled the government of  the Alpha Condé regime, arguing that the putsch was a violation of the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) protocol to which Guinea is signatory to.

Penpushing reports that, Muhammed Buhari led government while condemning the coup d’état said it was saddened and strongly condemned and rejected any unconstitutional change of government.

The country’s foreign ministry in a statement on Sunday, therefore called on those behind the coup to restore constitutional order without delay and protect lives and property ,stressing that the military action was violation on Democracy and Good Governance

‘The Nigerian government is saddened by the apparent coup d’etat that has taken place in the Republic of Guinea today, in clear violation of the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance,” , the statement emphasised

‘The government of Nigeria strongly condemns and rejects any unconstitutional change of government and therefore calls on those behind the coup to restore constitutional order without delay and protect lives and property”, the statement added

Penpushing further reports that, it is recalled that President of Guinea, Alpha Conde was on a visit to Buhari in his hometown   to celebrate  Eid-el-Kabir with him,and was welcomed by his host alongside. Emir of Daura Umar Farouk, among others

The United Nations(UN), in a similar vein, in a tweet by  Secretary-General, António Guterres  called for immediate release of the seized Guinea President, following the coup led by Colonel Mamady Doumbouya, and opened  fire on the presidential palace,

The coupists later took President Alpha Condé into custody, while sources in the country said soldiers were believed to have staged the coup on the heels of a move by the parliament to increase the salaries of politicians while slashing the budget for security forces.

Penpushing also reports that, another source said, the military strike was fanned by high level of poverty in the country despite being home to the world’s largest reserves of bauxite, the main source of aluminum for cars, beer cans and foil wrap.

The source in another quarters believed that, the military took the action over alleged plot by Conte to alter the constitution to pave way for his third term agenda, which did not go down too well with the military echelon.

Penpushing reports that, the coup leader, Doumbouya, with Guinea’s red, yellow and green flag draped on his shoulders in his address on state television, disclosed that the sacked President was in the military custody and warned people to go home.

The military leader pointed out that the state of the roads, hospitals and other sectors were nothing to write home about, stressing that it was time to wake up, and promised to broker a transition government that would not harm the nation but make love to it.
