Assault on Police: Court orders remand of Seun Kuti for additional 4 days

The accused in an assault case against a police in Lagos State, Seun Kuti, an Afrobeat singer has been ordered by the Sabo-Yaba Magistrate Court, Lagos State to remain in custody for additional four days, until May 22, 2023.

Penpushing reports the Chief Magistrate, Adeola Olatubosun, on Thursday extended Kuti’s remand, having granted an application by the police for extension of remand until investigation on the case is completed.

The Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Simon Lough, who led a police legal team to the court, had moved the application emphasisng that the extension is to allow further investigation into the case being faced by the accused.

Penpushing further reports that it is recalled that the 40-year-old musician, who is the last child of late Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti   was arraigned on Tuesday during which the Chief Magistrate ordered his remand for 48 hours.

The magistrate, however, held that the defendant should be admitted to bail in the sum of one million Naira with two sureties in like sum, at the end of the 48-hour remand, stressing that one of the sureties must be a landlord within the jurisdiction of the court.

Penpushing also reports that the magistrate, thereafter adjourned the case until 22 May for mention and directed the prosecutor to duplicate the case file and forward a copy to the State Director of Public Prosecutions for advice

Meanwhile, Kuti is charged with assaulting a police officer, and offence allegedly committed on 13 May 2023 on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos, where he was caught on video slapping an Inspector after driving dangerously on the bridge and deliberately blocking a moving police vehicle.
