The Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, (ABUAD) Multi-system Hospital has recorded another feat, following a successful open heart surgery which was performed by the management
Penpushing reports that, the Director, Corporate Affairs of the university, Mr Tunde Olofintila, made this known in a statement on Sunday, adding the feat was achieved by a medical team, led by Dr. Dave Dhiren.
The statement added that,, Dhiren had over three decades experience in adult and pediatric heart surgeries, having done more than 8,500 open heart surgeries like coronary artery bypass surgery, heart valve replacement and complex heart surgeries for children born with congenital heart defects among others
Penpushing further reports that, the hospital spokesman disclosed that the open surgery was performed on an elderly woman at the emergency unit of its cardiac centre during which a large mass, measuring 7cm x 5cm, was removed from the left side chamber of the patient’s heart.
The statement added that, the patient who developed sudden breathlessness from a condition known as “left atrial myxoma” a few days back was brought to the multi-system hospital where she was treated as an emergency and was effectively stabilized.
“ Left atrial myxoma” is relatively rare condition which can lead to sudden death or severe damage to the brain and paralysis if not operated upon as early as possible”, the statement said.
Penpushing also reports that, the institution image maker said the medical team that attended to the female patient, advised her to consider an urgent open heart surgery which she acceded to.
The statement explained that, the patient subsequently underwent the successful heart surgery, adding that the medical team leader, a senior heart surgeon from India, is currently working in the hospital with his other experienced cardiac surgical team.
“Dr. Dhiren has over 30 years experience in adult and pediatric heart surgeries, having done more than 8,500 Open Heart surgeries like Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery (CABG), Heart Valve Replacement and Complex Heart Surgeries for children born with congenital heart defects among others’.
“This feat, like many others before it, has also become another notable medical breakthroughs recorded by the Multi-system Hospital which has been acknowledged by leading Medical Educators and healthcare stakeholders as the most well-equipped Hospital in Sub-Saharan Africa’
“It was as a result of these that the hospital has progressively become the leading destination of quality health care in Nigeria. It is recalled that only recently, a “pin hole’’ surgery in which a major surgical procedure was carried out on a woman who had been trying to conceive for a long time but without success, using the Hospital’s Laparoscopy equipment and the cutting-edge medical technology in the hospital without necessarily having to open up the patient’s abdomen’
Penpushing reports that, the statement quoted Dhiren after the surgery as saying that the facilities in the hospital which made the procedure seamless can favourably compete with any hospital in Europe and America.
The medical team leader boasted that a lot of surgeries can be done using the same aimless medical method of surgery for many more women in the country, thereby stemming the tide of medical tourism abroad.
“He was full of praises for the founder and chancellor of the university, Aare Afe Babalola, for bringing such a high profile hospital to Nigeria and for providing the relevant world-class facilities required to advance breakthroughs
”It was his view that with this type of development in Nigeria, the tide of outward medical tourism would be stemmed, especially with the attendant conservation of the much needed and scarce foreign exchange in the country”, the statement added
