The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has resigned from office and is contained in a letter dated Wednesday April 22, 2926, taking effect from the end of April and addressed to President Bola Tinubu
Penpushing reports that Adelabu explained that the timeline would allow for an orderly transition and handover of responsibilities in the ministry, however, his stepping down from his position in the Federal Executive Council (FEC), signallied his plan to contest the next Oyo State governorship election.
The former Minister in the letter transmitted through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation expressed appreciation to the President for the opportunity to serve in the cabinet, describing his appointment as a privilege.
Penpushing further reports that he said serving as Minister of Power had given him the opportunity to contribute to national development, particularly in reforms within the electricity sector.
“I write with a deep sense of honour and profound gratitude to formally tender my resignation as the Honourable Minister of Power of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. This resignation is to take effect on 30th April 2026, in order to allow sufficient time for a smooth and orderly handover of responsibilities’, the letter read.
“Your Excellency, I remain sincerely grateful for the privilege and confidence you reposed in me by appointing me to serve our great nation in this capacity, It has been a rare honour to contribute to national development under your leadership and to play a role in advancing reforms in the power sector—one of the most critical foundations of Nigeria’s industrial growth and economic transformation’, it added.
Penpushing also reports that Adelabu, however, stated that he was leaving office to concentrate on his political ambition in Oyo State, where he is expected to contest the 2027 governorship election.
“My decision to step down is informed by my intention to focus fully on my gubernatorial ambition in Oyo State. This aspiration, which dates back to 2016 during my service as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, ultimately led to my voluntary resignation from the Central Bank in 2018 in order to pursue the same goal.
“In line with the provisions of the Amended Electoral Act 2026, which preclude political office holders from contesting elections, I consider it both appropriate and necessary to resign at this time,” he said.
Penpushing reports that Adelabu had earlier in 2019 contested the Oyo State governorship election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), where he lost to incumbent Governor Seyi Makinde of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The former Minister, however, returned to the governorship race in 2023, this time under the Accord Party(AP), after leaving the All Progressives Congress (APC), also lost to Governor Makinde, who secured a second term.
Penpushing further reports that following the 2023 general elections, Adelabu rejoined the All Progressives Congress (APC), and was subsequently appointed Minister of Power by President Tinubu in August 2023.
