The United Premier Movement (UPM) has held its inaugural congress which is aimed to redefine political participation and restore citizens’ trust in leadership and build a coalition of credible Nigerians committed to good governance, integrity and accountability.

Penpushing reports that the Convener of the movement, Chief Olalekan Shoyinka in his welcome speech expressed joy over what he described as an epoch-making event, marking the official birth of a platform.

The convener popularly called Ayinla Egba explained that the movement emerged from a collective conviction formed after experiences during the Ogun State Local Government Elections held last November.

Penpushing further reports that he said this was particularly among individuals who are not card-carrying members of any political party but share the belief that ordinary citizens — professionals, artisans, traders and young visionaries — must rise to form a credible force that reflects the real aspirations of the people.

The convener explained that the transformation from the Ayinla Egba Movement (AEM), which operated under the Action Democratic Party (ADP) during the last local government elections, was not born out of conflict but a difference in ideology, stressing that the United Premier Movement (UPM) is open to all Nigerians who value unity, integrity and purposeful leadership.

Penpushing also reports that Shoyinka stressed that Nigeria is at a critical turning point, stating that what the country needs is not career politicians but citizens with conscience and commitment to service.

The convener pointed out that the United Premier Movement (UPM) is established to bridge the gap between the state and the citizens, restore dignity in leadership and rekindle hope in democracy.

Penpushing reports that Shoyinka speaking on speculations about 2027 political ambitions, especially concerning his next step, stated that the focus for now is on building the members, structure and shared vision that will drive the movement, adding that in due time, clarity would emerge.

The convener, however, called on Nigerians to register for their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and get involved ahead of 2027, adding that democracy works only when citizens rise to take responsibility.

“Today is not just an inauguration; it is a declaration a declaration of hope, unity and commitment to a new political order. Let the story of today echo across Ogun State and Nigeria’, he said

Penpushing further reports that highlight of the event was the presentation of certificates of membership which include Ganiu Shokunle, Hon. Yusuf Ayodele, Hon. Basit Olatunji, Comrade Idowu Ajibodu, Mrs. Kolawole Sakiru, Mr. Wasiu Sagbaolu, Mr. Olaosebikan Adebayo, Mr. Issac Adeosun and Mr. Oluwaseun Ayinde.
