The political terrain of Nigeria was jolted yet again with the news of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar’s reported exit from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). For many of us who identify as progressive-minded politicians, this news lands not as a loss, but as a long-awaited gust of fresh air — the beginning of what could be a genuine cleansing and rebuilding process for a party that once held so much promise.

If I were a card-carrying member of the PDP, I would interpret Atiku’s departure as a win — not a defeat. For decades, Alhaji Atiku has wielded his immense wealth, status, and political leverage not necessarily in service to the party or to national interest, but in pursuit of personal political ambition. His presence, though commanding, has too often overshadowed the broader democratic values that should define a party rooted in people and policy.

There was a time — yes, before the 2023 general elections — when I silently admired Atiku. His resilience, cosmopolitan appeal, and political longevity made him an emblem of hope for some. But the events leading to the 2023 elections, and his divisive role in the PDP’s pre- and post-election crisis, changed that perception completely. His actions betrayed not only an unwillingness to compromise but a near-clinical obsession with the presidency — an ambition seemingly pursued at the expense of party cohesion and national stability.

As we inch closer to 2027, it’s clear Atiku Abubakar is not prepared to step aside for the good of the system. He remains intent on bending the democratic space to fit his own narrative, even if that means rupturing political alliances and fracturing parties. Politicians with such disposition are dangerous for Nigeria’s fragile democracy. It is my fervent hope that his dominance in the political arena will finally be curtailed — not out of bitterness, but in the spirit of protecting a political system that thrives on teamwork, inclusiveness, and generational renewal.

To those rallying behind his latest coalition — I urge caution. History has shown that following a man driven solely by ambition and not ideology often leads to nowhere. There is no redemption in walking paths already proven to be destructive. Atiku’s leadership style, often cloaked in elite entitlement, is inconsistent with the demands of a modern, participatory political culture.

In contrast, look at Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. His political genius lies not merely in personal ambition, but in an ability to build and sustain a coalition of talents, ideologies, and generations. One may critique his policies or style, but it is undeniable that Tinubu is a team player — a builder, not a splitter. He understands that true power in politics is not in demanding loyalty, but in commanding it through collaborative vision.

Coincidentally, Atiku’s announcement comes at a time when I too made a personal political decision: to resign my membership from the Action Democratic Party (ADP) — a party under whose banner I contested the last local government elections in Abeokuta South. The timing is serendipitous. For me, both decisions represent a pivot — a return to foundational values and political clarity.

As the PDP begins this new chapter, I extend my best wishes to its loyal members. Let this be the beginning of realignment, restoration, and rediscovery. There is still one more “strongman” clinging to the fence — and perhaps, as the house-cleaning continues, the next breeze will take care of that as well.

May Nigeria’s democracy prevail — and may our parties begin to reflect the dreams of those they were meant to serve.

Hon. (Chief) Olalekan A. Shoyinka (Ayinla Egba) is convener of United Premier Movement, Abeokuta South Local Government, Ogun State
