Agbako, oldest Yoruba film actor is dead

A veteran Yoruba actor in the film and entertainment industry, , Pa Charles Olumo Sanyaolu, popularly known as Agbako, has been reported dead on Thursday at age 101, shortly after a nap and complaining of slight tiredness.

Penpushing reports that the development was confirmed by the President of Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN), Bolaji Amusan, and corroborated by another veteran actor Jide Kosoko

The Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN), President popularly called ‘Mr Latin’ explained that details of the burial will be made public soon, recalling that the deceased was the oldest living Nollywood actor in Yoruba movie industry as at the time of his death.

‘Tampan global announces the passing of Pa Charles Olumo Sanyaolu, fondly known as Agbako. Details of the burial arrangement will be shared at a later time. Good night father 25/02/1923 to 31/10/2024’, Amusan wrote

Penpushing further reports that the statement said the deceased born in Abeokuta was once a mechanic at Tinubu square in Lagos and an amateur boxer, who began his acting career in 1953 in Lagos state.

The statement added that Agbako has been known for his action roles in Yoruba films, and was featured in movies like Taxi Driver, Jagun, Amin Orun,Aiye, Jaiyesimi, Saworo Ide, Igbo Dudu alongside with other movies

Penpushing also reports that the late veteran actor was a beloved figure in the Yoruba film industry, while his life spanned over a century has left an indelible mark on the cultural heritage of Nigeria, and his influence on the Yoruba movie industry was profound, with countless admirers who grew up watching his performances in classic Yoruba films.

The deceased was renowned for his portrayal of bold and often complex characters, bringing a unique flair and authenticity to the screen that won him generations of fans, who rose to prominence in Yoruba cinema

Penpushing reports that Agbako became globally recognised for his ability to embody both comedic and villainous roles, a versatility that endeared him to viewers and solidified his place as one of the most memorable faces in the industry.

The late veteran actor, and his impact over the years extended beyond acting, as he became a cultural symbol, representing the evolution of Nigerian cinema and the Yoruba tradition in entertainment and shaping the future of Yoruba cinema.
