The Senate has urged the Nigerian government to immortalise the late Taiwo Akinkunmi, who designed the national flag, but died in August 29, 2023 at 89, as announced via the Facebook account of one of his children, Samuel Akinkunmi
Penpushing reports that the resolution followed a motion sponsored on Tuesday by Senator Sharafudeen Ali, representing Oyo-South of Oyo State at the national assembly under the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) at the plenary.
The Senator while presenting the motion, demanded the immortalisation of the late Akinkunmi in recognition of his achievements and contributions to the development of the country, and urged the Nigerian government to rename national monuments after the deceased, a native of Abeokuta
Penpushing further reports that Ali called for the establishment of a historical initiative for the documentation of the achievements and contributions of the deceased, while the motion was seconded by Senator Sadiq Umar of All Progressives Congress (APC)
The Senator wo is representing Kawar North at the national assembly noted that the immortalisation was necessary for the younger generation to know the achievements and contributions of the late Akinkunmi in the development of the country.
Penpushing also reports that when the motion was put to debate, majority of the senators supported the motion through a voice vote, and in response the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, thereafter directed the senators to observe a minute silence in honour of the designer of the national flag.
