A police officer, identified simply as Linus, said to be an Assistant Superintendent of Police, popularly called Agbalagba has been beheaded by gunmen who attacked a police team at Ndiegoro, Aba in Aba South Local Government Area of Abia State.
Penpushing reports that sources said the gunmen captured Linus and reportedly took away his rifle, uniform and beheaded him while his colleagues fled the scene after briefly engaging the gunmen in a shoot-out.
The source added that the gunmen were heard shouting that they had declared war on the police in the state, stating that in the course of the attack many residents within the vicinity took to their heels, in a bid to avoid untimely death
Penpushing further reports that the beheaded police officer hailed from Ebonyi State, but working with the Abia State Police Command, before he met his untimely death on Tuesday from the bloody attack launched by the gunmen.
The residents were of the view that the beheading of the officer might have been in retaliation for the killing of a gunman by the police on 13 April in the area, while it is on record that there have been clashes between security agencies and some hoodlums in the area lately
Penpushing also reports that Abia State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Geoffrey Ogbonna, as at the time of filing this report was yet to issue any statement on the ugly development, but promised to do later.
“The dastardly act is highly condemned and the public is enjoined to help with credible information on the perpetrators or anyone found with a firearm suspected to have been unlawfully obtained’, Ogbonna said.
Penpushing reports that he, however, urged residents of the state to assist the police with credible information that will help to track down the hoodlums, and equally appealed to them to report to the police any non-security operative seen with a firearm in the area, assuring that the identity of the informants would be protected.
