Gender Development Initiative trains women associations on reporting gender based violence

The Gender Development Initiative (GENDI), a Non-Governmental Organisation(NGO) has organized a training programme for Women across different associations, which focused on leadership and reporting of sexual gender based violence.

Penpushing reports that the training held at Pius De Pious Event Place on Friday along Moshood Abiola way, Abeokuta, Ogun State Capital was supported by Women Advocate Research and Documentation Centre (WARDC) and Ford Foundation

The training session entails experience sharing from former CRT members, promoting women’s leadership in addressing violence,, reporting template, action plan development and group presentation among others.

Penpushing further reports that the Program Officer Miss Ifeoluwa Omoraka in her welcome address acknowledged roles of Women Advocate Research and Documentation Centre (WARDC) and Ford Foundation in supporting the Gender Development Initiative (GENDI)

The Programme Officer noted that the benefits of the partnership towards the project include solidarity, accountability, commitment on ending violence against women and Girls (SAC-VAWG), which is been presently implemented at two local government and communities in the state.

Penpushing also reports that Omoraka pointed out another benefit from the Women Advocate Research and Documentation Centre (WARDC), is coming to the aid of women who have been violated by one means or the other, by providing financial, legal and psychological assistance.

The Program officer implored the different executives from the associations to write out the action plans that can be put in place to increase females’ leadership and reportage of Gender Based Violence Case.

The experience sharing was by Mrs Remilekun Kusimo from Awowo community, adding that her community has been beneficiary of the project, assuring that at the end of the training participants are better equipped with knowledge

Penpushing reports that Kusimo who said she is a member of the Community Response Team explained that the trainings have helped to deal with some Gender Based Cases in their community thereby maintaining peace in the community.

The representative of the Ministry of Women Affairs  A. M Odemuyiwa  educated the participants on what gender means and the different type  of gender roles, noting that Gender Based Violence Gender-based violence (GBV) is an umbrella term for any harmful act that is perpetrated against a person’s will and that is based on socially ascribed

Penpushing further reports that she said it includes acts that inflict physical, sexual or mental harm or suffering, threats of such acts, coercion, and other deprivations of liberty, stating that Gender Based Violence is a pandemic which is presently distorting a lot of young and older journey to good life

The Ministry official  appealed to all participants to make it a point of duty to speak up and be ready to work against Gender Based Violence at all levels, assuring  the participants that the Ministry of Women Affairs is always ready to help anytime assistance is needed.

Penpushing also reports that a facilitator at the training Madam Temitope Alfred, encouraged young girls to go for careers that they have interest in with no biased-on gender roles, stressing need  to have more female leaders who are concerned about the wellbeing of younger girls in their associations.

The facilitator called on  the participants of  importance  to take reporting of Gender based Violence case as a duty, and  encouraged mothers to educate and encourage their young females to speak up on any cases of Gender based Violence and stand up for other females as well.
