A lawmaker representing Awka South Constituency 1 in Anambra State House of Assembly Hon Nnamdi Okafor on Wednesday slumped and died in a hotel in Sandton City, Johannesburg, South Africa, while cause of death was still unknown as at the time of filing this report

Penpushing reports that, Okafor who was the majority leader in the assembly, was said to be part of some lawmakers from the state who travelled to South Africa to attend a training organised for them by the assembly.

The Anambra State Governor of Prof Charles Soludo, in a statement by his spokesperson, Christian Aburime confirmed the death of the lawmaker, expressing shock over the incident, and described the deceased as an active participant at the assembly who devoted his time and energy to represent his constituency.

“It is shocking that the state assembly lost another lawmaker to the cold hands of death, coming barely three months after the demise of the lawmaker representing Aguata 2 Constituency, Hon. Okechukwu Okoye,” he said.

“On behalf of the Anambra State Government, may I use this medium to convey my sympathy to those he left behind, including his family, Awka South Constituency 1 and the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Uche Okafor as well as other lawmakers’, Soludo said.

Penpushing further reports that, demise of Okafor will be second in the Anambra House of Assembly, while this was coming in less than three months, when gunmen abducted a lawmaker, Hon Okechukwu Okoye, representing Aguata 2 Constituency and beheaded him

The beheaded lawmaker was murdered on 21 May alongside with his aide, Cyril Chiegboka, six days after they were abducted along Aguluigbo Road, Anaocha Local Government Area of the state, while this development has reduced the number of the lawmakers to 28 from 30

Penpushing also reports that, to meet up 30 members from 21 local government areas in the state, a new election is expected to be held in the state to replace the deceased lawmakers as soon as possible to avoid vacuum
