Barely few minutes after Islamic funeral prayers were performed on the remains of Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi,  the Sango devotees took over the corpse for apparent continuation of traditional rites.

Penpushing reports that, the Chief Imam of Oyo Mas’ud Adebayo, had earlier led other clerics in the afternoon   to perform Janazah, thereafter traditionalists took possession of  the remains from Ode Aro part of the palace into the Oba Adeyemi III Hall.

The traditional worshippers who ordered journalists and other mourners to leave, the hall, later formed circle round the corpse on the mat, chanting dirges and eulogies of Sango according to Yoruba mythology.

Penpushing further reports that, in a related development curfew has been enforced in the ancient town, as traditionalists commenced the final funeral procession for the passing of the monarch.

The announcement was earlier made in the afternoon that the final burial ritual would take place at 9 p.m. but curfew would be enforced from 7 p.m, while the burial procession is expected to pass through Akesan market through Oke Apo and Ajagba areas before stopping at Bara, regarded as the abode of late Alaafins.

Penpushing also reports that, palace sources disclosed that some rites will still  be performed and the remains will be returned to the palace for final rituals, adding that apart from Sango devotees others with significant roles to play in the burial include  traditional groups like ‘Ibe Tetu’, ‘Ona Ile Mole’, and ‘Ona On’se Awo.’.
