The Iyalode of Yorubaland, Iyalode Alaba Lawson has urged parents to join hands together to uphold the rich culture and language  ,noting that the diverse culture will bring the country together as a united nation.

Penpushing reports that, Lawson made this known while speaking at Cultural Day of Lawson Group of Schools, held at the college premises located in Kuto area of Abeokuta, the Ogun State Capital.

“Culture and tradition in Nigeria is very rich and diversity of culture will bring us together  if we know exactly what our culture is and what it stands for” she said.

The renowned educationist pointed out that there was need for children to know the deep root of cultural aspect like tribal marks, hairdo, adding that they should be taught of cultural and traditional values of each ethnic to make them united.

“Definitely they need to know the deep root and even the tribal marks, what it means, even all these hairstyles that we have, they have names and so therefore you must  know which area it comes from and we need to teach our children the cultural value and traditional value of our each ethnics that will make us to unify Nigerians “ she said.

Penpushing further reports that, chairman of the occasion, Mr Ahmed Kilaso commended the management of the college for reviving the culture and tradition which is almost going into extinction, stressing that the importance of the occasion is to retrace origin and not jeopardize culture.

“The ceremony is very wonderful and in fact we learn a lot of things there, actually the significant of the occasion is telling us that we should know our origin and beside that, we should not jeopardize our culture” he said.

Penpushing also reports that, one of the parents, Engr Akinsola Afolabi noted that parents and guardians are responsible for children not showing interest in their mother tongue, which made it difficult for them to even speak their dialects.

The parent admitted that, number of parents failed to communicate with their children in their local languages, adding that worst of it many parents speak diluted local languages and proverbs to their wards

“I can say parents are responsible for that because nowadays it’s hard for parents to speak their local dialect or language to their children unlike, when weare growing up my parents will speak Yoruba to us and we will be able to speak Yoruba to them and even say different kind of Yoruba like proverbs” he said.

Penpushing reports that, Afolabi also faulted number of schools for contributing to the failed culture and tradition, adding that many of them are in the habit of ignoring local languages at the detriment of the innocent children

“Nowadays we have to look into the parents aspects and the school as well because in some schools I don’t think they practice Yoruba as well, so they always speak English so  it’s very hard for them” he said.
