The prominent Senatorial Candidate of Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) in Ogun State ahead of 2027 elections, Prof Iyabo Obasanjo has raised the alarm over alleged renewed threats to her life following the disruption of her party’s campaign gathering in Abeokuta, Ogun State Capital.
Penpushing reports that Obasanjo, who is seeking the senatorail office from Ogun Central Senatorial District made this kknown in an interview, explaining that following the attack on Monday she has informed the United Nations(UN), United States of America(USA) Embassy in Nigeria and the international community.
The daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo reacting to the reported attack at Ward 16, Trailer Park, Soyooye area of Abeokuta North Local Government Area of the state described the incident as a growing threat to her safety and the integrity of the forthcoming election.
Penpushing further reports that she affirmed that videos circulating online showed several men, some allegedly masked and carrying cutlasses, dismantling campaign canopies and attacking people shortly before her arrival at the venue, stressing that unless the alleged violence was checked, she and other members of her political camp would draw the attention of the international community to developments in Ogun State.
The chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP)said that,was not the first time attempts were made after her life, recalling an incident during the 2003 election when gunmen opened fire on a vehicle in her convoy after allegedly believing that she was inside it, adding that all the occupants of the vehicle were killed in the incident.
“This is not the first time they are making attempts at my life. I say it aloud now. If anything happens to me, the whole world should know those who are behind it’, Obasanjo cried out.
Penpushing also reports that she linked the incident to what she described as a broader pattern of threats against her and queried the alleged continued interest of some of her former political associates in her decision to leave the All Progressives Congress and join the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP).
“They showed clearly they do not want me in APC. They treated me like scum and I left their party for them and got into a party that openly embraced me. So, why are they still concerned about me when I resigned from their party and the internal affairs details of my own party, PDP?”, she said
Penpushing reports that Obasanjo urged greater attention to the safety of political actors and supporters as preparations intensify for the 2027 elections, cautioning that continued incidents of political violence could undermine confidence in the electoral process if not urgently addressed.
The eyewitness account equally said over 10 suspected hoodlums allegedly invaded the venue of the party’s campaign venue before the arrival of the Senatorial Candidate and Governorship Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) Ladi Adebutu.
Penpushing further reports that the sources added that when Obasanjo and Adebutu eventually arrived at the venue they met damaged political materials of the party, as well as some members of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) who has sustained various degree of injuries following the attack
The attackers dispossed the victims of their personal effects which include mobile phones among others, however, both Obasanjo and Adebutu later contacted security authorities, including the Ogun State Police Command and Department of State Services.
Penpushing also reports that the policemen and operatives of the Department of Security Service(DSS) were later deployed to the scene, however, as at the time of filing this report, identities of the attckers and political affliation yet to be ascertain.
Meanwhile, Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Seyi Babaseyi as at when contacted was yet to be affirmative of the circumstance surrounding the incident.
