The remains of 105 corpses recovered in the tanker explosion which occurred late Tuesday in Majiya town located in the Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State were buried on Wednesday in a mass grave, which was attended by Governor Umar Namadi of the state.

Penpushing reports that Jigawa State Police Command Public Relations Officer Lawan Adam, confirmed that the 105 bodies were recovered from the scene after the fire subsided, as corroborated by the residents.

The police had earlier confirmed 94 deaths in the explosion which occurred late Tuesday, until when more bodies were later recovered, while about 70 other victims were receiving treatment at health facilities in Ringim and Hadejia.

Penpushing further reports that the police spokesperson, disclosed that the majority of the victims had gathered around the tanker to scoop fuel, adding that the  fuel had spilled and was flowing through the drainage to the outskirts of the village.

“Unfortunately, villagers attempted to scoop petrol from the drainage, resulting in a flame that engulfed the area and many people perished. The fire was successfully extinguished through the combined efforts of police officers, firefighters, and good Samaritans’, Adam said.

Penpushing also reports that the command image maker said the 32-year-old driver of the tanker with registration number KMC 6412 F, Yusuf Muhammad, lost control as he drove into the town on a journey from Kano to Nguru in Yobe State, adding that he survived the accident.

The Police Public Relations Officer said the commissioner of police, Ahmed Abdullahi, had sent his condolences to the people of Majia and the state over the tragedy, with a caution on people to always  stay away from the area where gas tankers have fallen due to the potential hazards related to petroleum products .

“The Commissioner of Police, therefore, cautions well-meaning citizens of the state to stay away from the area where gas tankers have fallen due to the potential hazards related to petroleum products’ Adam said.
