A 28-year-old man, Ashiru Idris, has been sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment by the Federal High Court in Kano without the option of a fine for advertising cannabis sativa for sale on social media.
Penpushing reports that the Media and Advocacy Officer of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Kano State Strategic Command, Sadiq Muhammad Maigatari. made this known in a statement on Wednesday.
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) disclosed that Idris was convicted by Justice S.M. Shuaibu on July 14, 2026, and commended the court for delivering a landmark judgment.
“The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) today commends the Federal High Court, Kano, for delivering a landmark judgment in a matter arising from public advertisement and sale of cannabis sativa’, the statement read.
“On 22 April 2026, operatives of the NDLEA Kano Strategic Command, acting on the directive of the State Commander, CN DY Lawal, arrested one Ashiru Idris (m), 28, following the circulation on social media of a video showing him publicly advertising cannabis sativa for sale’, it added.
Penpushing further reports that the statement stated that the agency said the court ordered that the seven-year jail term should run from the date of judgment, adding that the Commander DY Lawal, described the judgment as a strong warning to individuals who promote or engage in the illicit drug trade.
“This judgment reinforces our resolve to confront drug offenders who brazenly promote illegal substances on public platforms. We will continue to act swiftly on credible leads and ensure offenders are brought to justice,” Lawal said.
Penpushing also reports that the agency urged members of the public to support efforts to combat drug trafficking and substance abuse by providing credible information to security agencies.
