A former Kano State Governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, has defected from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party and pitched tent with the ruling All Progressives Congress9APC).
Penpushing reports that Shekarau made the development known on Sunday at his residence on Mundubawa Avenue in Kano, which was decorated with All Progressives Congress (APC) posters.
The former Governor who left Peoples Democratic Party (APC) alongside a chieftain of the opposition party, Senator Bello Hayatu Gwarzo, while addressing his loyalists explained that the decision followed wide consultations and careful consideration of available political options.
Penpushing further reports that Shekarau emphasized that he had weighed all the options and arrived at this collective resolution, asking of the loyalists opposed to the move to speak up
The former Governor had earlier written a resignation letter dated April 19, 2026, and addressed to the Chairman Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of Giginyu Ward in Nassarawa Local Government Area of the state
“Accept this letter please as notice of my resignation from my position as member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with effect from today. I thank you for being a good leader, and pray that Allah will continue to guide you in your stewardship’, he wrote.
Penpushing also reports that Shekarau in the letter with copies sent to the Chairman Kano State Chapter of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman and the party Chairman of Nassarawa Local Government Area, indicating formal notification across party structures, expressed appreciation to party leadership at the ward level.
The former Governor’s move follows months of speculation fuelled by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP’s) internal crisis, while it is recalled that in April, during a visit by National Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC), Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, Shekarau hinted at his impending exit from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), describing the opposition party as afflicted by problems that had rendered it ineffective.
Penpushing reports that in similar vein, it would be recalled that Shekarau held closed-door meetings with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf.
The record has it that Shekarau, who governed Kano State from 2003 to 2011 under the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), has a history of defection, and was a founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) but later defected.
Penpushing further reports the known defector in 2018 ledt Peoples Democratic Party to Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and returned to the All Progressives Congress (APC) before he later crossed carpet.
