In the sprawling and often turbulent landscape of Nigerian Journalism, there are leaders who command the headlines, and then there are those who build the very ground upon which the storytellers stand.

Olufunke Adedayo Fadugba belongs to the latter, a rare breed of visionary whose leadership is defined not by the noise of the moment, but by the enduring structures of security she left behind.

As the CIKDAS Leadership Series turns its spotlight toward her, we encounter a story of a woman who understood that the sustainability of a profession begins with the dignity of its practitioners.

Her journey is a masterclass in transformative leadership, proving that to lead a people is to carry their burdens as if they were your own, and to lead a union is to secure the futures of its members.

Olufunke’s name is etched in gold as the first female Chairman of the Lagos State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), a milestone that, in the high-octane environment of Nigeria’s media hub, required more than just professional competence, it required a spine of steel and a heart of gold.

In a terrain where women were often relegated to the sidelines of union politics, she ascended to the pinnacle of the most influential council in the country. Yet, her chairmanship was never a mere pursuit of prestige. She stepped into power with a singular, revolutionary mission: to solve the silent crisis of housing insecurity that haunted the very journalists who spent their lives advocating for the rights of others.

The hallmark of her impact remains the visionary Journalist Estate in Arepo. Olufunke recognised that for a journalist to be truly independent and ethical, they must first be secure. She saw colleagues who had spent decades serving the public interest retiring into the uncertainty of rented apartments, vulnerable to the whims of the city’s harsh real estate market.

With a tenacity that became her signature, she pioneered and introduced housing schemes that turned the elusive dream of homeownership into a tangible reality for hundreds of media practitioners.

This was not just a real estate project; it was an act of social engineering that provided a sanctuary for the fourth estate. By ensuring that journalists had homes of their own, she gave them more than bricks and mortar, she gave them a stake in the future and a legacy of permanence that continues to shelter families today.

At CIKDAS, we celebrate Olufunke Fadugba because her life embodies the essence of Indigenous Knowledge Development and Sustainability. She did not just lead for her time; she built for eternity.

Today, her influence continues to ripple through the industry as she mentors the next generation, sharing the “indigenous wisdom” of ethical reporting and resilient leadership through her roles in media consultancy and her leadership on the editorial boards of prestigious platforms, Penpushing Media

She remains a lighthouse for young women in the media, a reminder that gender is no barrier to greatness and that true achievement is measured by the number of people who find shelter under the canopy of your vision. We honor her as a pioneer, a builder, and a true custodian of the professional soul.

CIKDAS Leadership Series: Celebrating Impact. Sustaining Knowledge. Honouring Legends.
