A Nigerian journalist Olamilekan Jaji has officially unveiled his authored book ‘Ageing For You and Me’, a guide aimed at helping both young and old Nigerians embrace lifestyles that promote long-term wellness.
Penpushing reports that the ceremony which also featured a lecture was held at Iwe-Iroyin Press Centre, Oke-Ilewo, Abeokuta, which attracted scholars, community leaders and media professionals, as well as other guests
The colourful event brought renewed attention to the challenges facing senior citizens, especially in the areas of mental health, dementia awareness and social support and the book focuses on the importance of cultivating healthy habits early in life.
Penpushing further reports that the author in his welcome speech noted that the book emphasizes proper nutrition, mindful living, and holistic self-care, adding that young people must understand what they consume and how their choices today impact their health in the future.
The convener, said the book was written to deepen public understanding of senior care and to encourage empathy toward aging parents and community elders, described ageing as a privilege, not a burden.
Penpushing also reports that Jaji called for a society where older people feel valued, included and supported and urged families to show compassion, listen more and help seniors navigate changes they can no longer control.
The guest lecturer Dr. Adefolakemi Ogundele, in his paper “The Mental Health of Senior Citizens: Our Roles’, focused on the mental health of elderly people and the need for society to understand the biological, psychological and social dimensions of ageing
Penpushing reports that Ogundele explained that ageing naturally affects memory, sleep patterns and emotional stability, stressing that depression, anxiety, dementia and sleep disorders are among the most common issues older adults face.
The Geriatric Expert and Consultant Psychiatrist at the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta pointed out that older men above 70 record some of the highest suicide rates globally, often due to loss, chronic illnesses, isolation or emotional distress.
Penpushing further reports that she warned families against dismissing symptoms or attributing them to spiritual causes, emphasising that early medical attention, regular health screenings and emotional support can prevent avoidable crises.
The lecturer added that poor sleep habits among younger people may lead to more complicated ageing in the future, urging everyone to maintain healthy lifestyles and avoid drug abuse.
Penpushing also reports that Chairman of the occasion Rear Admiral Ayodele Oshunmakinde(rtd) in his remarks noted that the book came at the appropriate time, particularly when the Nigeria’s elderly population continues to grow.
Meanwhile, the ceremony was rounded off with presentation of humanitarian awards to Ambassador Babatunde Adeyemo and Mr Dotun Oladipupo, for their contributions towards a better society.
