The remains of former President Muhammadu Buhari were on Tuesday laid to rest in his hometown, Daura, Katsina State, in a solemn ceremony that drew dignitaries from across the country and beyond.

Penpushing reports that the remains were interred after the funeral prayer led by the Imam of the Central Mosque in Daura, Sheikh Salisu Rabiu, who conducted the ceremony according to Islamic rites,

The body of Buhari who served Nigeria both as a military Head of State and a democratically elected President was buried at 5:50pm, and in a display of unity, Army Generals and Service Chiefs bore the remains of Buhari on a stretcher to his graveside for interment and followed with a 21-gun salute, symbolising a collective final honour from the nation’s military leadership

Penpushing further reports that the remains of Buhari arrived in Katsina earlier on Tuesday from London, where he passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 82 after a prolonged illness.

The corpse conveyed by the Nigerian Air Force aircraft was accompanied by Vice President Kashim Shettima and other senior government officials, to the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport.

Penpushing also reports that on arrival at the airport, the corpse in the casket, draped in the national colours, was transported by chopper to Daura, a journey that saw thousands line the routes, eager to catch a final glimpse of the late President.

The funeral prayers and interment took place at Buhari’s private residence, attended by a select gathering of family, close associates, and Islamic clerics, and among prominent personalities present to pay their last respects were President Bola Tinubu.

Penpushing reports that the President, personally received the remains of his predecessor in Katsina, alongside several state governors, cabinet members, and former heads of state.

The atmosphere at Daura was one of deep sorrow mixed with quiet reverence, with thousands of residents, kinsmen, and well-wishers thronged the ancient town since Monday, creating a palpable sense of loss.

Penpushing further reports that despite the heavy security presence, commercial activities continued, albeit with a subdued air, as the community prepared to bid farewell to their most illustrious son.

The Nigerian Government had earlier declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, announced a public holiday to honour the late President, allowing Nigerians, particularly those in the North-West region, to participate in or observe the state burial proceedings.

Penpushing also reports that family members and close friends of the deceased were seen in sorrowful moods, receiving condolences from the countless sympathisers who visited his residence.
