A Nigerian boxer, Olanrewaju ‘Success’ Segun has been reported dead after he collapsed during a bout against Ghana’s Jon Mbanugu at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Ghana

Penpushing reports that the sad incident occurred on Saturday March 29, 2025, and despite urgent efforts to revive him, he was unresponsive and was rushed to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The boxer, a former National and West African light-heavyweight champion was competing at Fight Night 15 of the Ghana Professional Boxing League when he suddenly lost consciousness in the third round.

Penpushing further reports that witnesses described the tragic moment when Olarenwaju collapsed in the ring, prompting an immediate response from the referee, trainers, and medical personnel, while reports indicate that he was ahead on points before the incident occurred.

The sudden collapse of Olanrewaju was captured in a widely circulated video on social media, while an official cause of death has not yet been confirmed as at the time of filing this report.

Penpushing also reports that early speculation suggests a cardiac arrest, and his opponent visibly troubled by the tragic turn of events, has expressed deep condolences to the deceased family and loved ones.

The opponent lamented that what began as a fierce contest between two skilled fighters ended in heartbreak, shifting focus from competition to mourning, while the  boxing community has been pouring in tributes, remembering the late boxer as a dedicated and highly respected figure in the sport.

Penpushing reports that Olanrewaju’s last recorded fight took place on December 24, 2024 against Idowu Raheed at the Campos Mini Stadium in Lagos, before Saturday’s unfortunate incident.
