The Rivers State House of Assembly has served a notice of alleged misconduct against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his Deputy Ngozi Odu, a move believes to be a step to impeach the duo from offices.

Penpushing reports that record has it that this is the second time since Fubara was sworn in in 2023 that the lawmakers would be making an attempt to impeach him as the Governor of the state.

The Governor and his predecessor (Wike), who is not Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) had been engaged in a protracted political battle for the control of the political structure in the state.

Penpushing reports that Speaker of the assembly, Rt Hon Martin Amaewhule, and 26 lawmakers are loyal to Wike, while three are loyal to Fubara who is the sitting Governor, however, the lawmakers in a notice dated March 14,2025 accused Governor of spending state funds without approval from the assembly.

The lawmakers accused Fubara of appointing people to run the government without required screening and confirmation as well as hindering or obstructing the assembly from its constitutional functions and seizing salaries, allowances, and funds belonging to lawmakers, clerk, and the assembly.

Penpushing further reports that the lawmakers in same vein accused the Deputy Governor,  Odu, of conniving and supporting the illegal appointment of persons to occupy offices/positions in the Rivers State Government without allowing for the requirement of screening and confirmation.

The speaker was said to have forwarded the notice signed by 26 members, who are not less than one-third of the members of the assembly as prescribed by the Nigerian Constitution, to the Governor.

Penpushing also reports that as at the time of filing this reports the Speaker has asked the Governor to reply to the allegations of gross misconduct, but the Governor was yet to react to the development.
