The family of the late military dictator Sanni Abacha has declared that the former President Ibrahim Babangida was only trying to distort the truth about the annulment of June 12, 1993 Presidential election.

Penpushing reports that the deceased family made this known in a statement issued by son of Abacha, faulting the claim of Babangida in his recently launched autobiography stating that the late Nigerian leader and other military personnel were behind the nullification of the election.

The family emphasized that Babangida known as evil genius and Maradona was shifting blame, pointing out that Abacha, till his death, was a true and loyal friend to Babangida, and that late Abacha was neither the Head of State nor the Commander-in-Chief at the time of the annulment

“It is important to state unequivocally that General Sani Abacha was neither the Head of State nor the Commander-in-Chief at the time the June 12 election was annulled. The decision to annul the election was made under the administration of General Ibrahim Babangida, who, as the then Head of State, held absolute executive powers and was solely responsible for the actions of his government.

“Any attempt to shift this blame onto General Sani Abacha, who was a very senior military officer within the regime, is a deliberate distortion of historical facts, the Abacha’s family emphasised

Penpushing further reports that the family asked Nigerians to take the claims with a pinch of salt and be wary of revisionist narratives that seek to manipulate public perception for personal or political reasons.

The former military ruler in his autobiography said he regretted the annulment of the 1993 presidential election and blamed Abacha and other military officers for annulling the election described as one of Nigeria’s freest and most credible elections.

Penpushing also reports that the presidential election held 32 years ago, was won by late Moshood Abiola, then the candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), but was never installed after Babangida’s government nullified the election in a nationwide broadcast on June 24, 1993.

Meanwhile, the retired military ruler in the autobiography titled “A Journey in Service”, however, acknowledged that the poll was credible, free and fair and was won by Abiola who died in military detention.
