The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted activist Omoyele Sowore bail in the sum of N10 million, who is facing cybercrime case filed against him by the police over his social media remarks regarding the Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun as incompetent and unlawfully in office.

Penpushing reports that the court as part of the bail conditions granted Swore, on Thursday ordered him to provide an Abuja resident with landed property in the capital city as surety, stressing that the surety must swear an Affidavit of Means and deposit with the registrar of the court an original Certificate of Occupancy of a landed property in Abuja, which must be verified by the court’s registrar.

The trial judge, Justice Abdulla Liman, who dismissed the prosecution’s objection to Sowore’s bail request in his ruling, however, declared that the surety must be a prominent and responsible Nigerian citizen.

Penpushing further reports that Liman in same vein, ordered Sowore and his surety to submit their recent passport photographs and their means of identification preferably the National Identity Card with the court’s registrar.

The police, it is recalled on Monday, filed the cybercrime case, which attracts a penalty of a N7 million fine, up to three years’ imprisonment, or both for his social media post against the police boss, while the accused denied all the 17 counts during his arraignment on Wednesday.

Penpushing also reports that the trial judge after granting the bail to Sowore who has been detained since honouring police invitation in Abuja on Monday, however, adjourned the trial to April 8, 2025
