The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed that 22 people were killed on Saturday stampede which occurred in Okija, a community in Ihiala Local Government Area of the state during pallative distributions.
Penpushing reports that the Command Public Relations Officer Tochukwu Ikenga, made this known in a statement on Sunday explaining that Commissioner, Nnaghe Obono, confirmed the casualty figure when he visited the hospital where the victims were taken to.
The police spokesperson, a superintendent of police, added that other people were injured during the stampede, but did not give details, stating that the command commiserated with the families and friends of the deceased and wished those injured a quick recovery.
Penpushing further reports that the statement emphasized that investigation into the unfortunate incident was still ongoing, adding that the command remains dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of Ndi Anambra on crime prevention, responding promptly and effectively to emergencies, protecting vulnerable populations and fostering a sense of security and community.
The residents, it is recalled had gone to take part in the sharing of bags of rice donated by a philanthropist Ernest Obiejesi, popularly known as Obijackson which was organised by the Obijackson Foundation, through when the incident happened.
