Artificial Intelligence is future of radio broadcasting, says Toun Okewale-Sonaiya

The Chief Executive Officer and Founder Women Radio 91.7FM, Toun Okewale-Sonaiya has affirmed that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is not just the future but the present of radio broadcasting, explaining that the station unveiled its AI model “Nimi” designed to empower women with real-time support.

Penpushing reports that Okewale-Sonaiya made this known while speaking at the Artificial Intelligence (AI) radio summit organized by Women Radio 91.7FM held in Lagos, with number of participants in attendance

The veteran broadcaster highlighted Nimi’s importance as a radio confidante and companion that offers a safe space for support and knowledge and expressed pride in her team’s efforts in pushing the boundaries of what radio can achieve with the creation of Nigeria’s first radio virtual assistant “Nimi”.

Penpushing further reports that Head of Innovation at CJID, Monsur Hussain, at the event demonstrated how the Dubawa audio platform monitors radio shows by recording, transcribing and extracting potentially false or misleading claims which are then presented to the Dubawa Fact-checkers for in-depth investigations; bringing accountability and safeguarding journalistic integrity in Nigeria’s broadcast sector.

The Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Lagos State Governor Gboyega Akosile commended Women Radio for setting a precedent with Nimi AI that serves as a model for what we can achieve when technology meets creativity.

‘The Lagos State government’s interest in technology sits well with Women Radio AI Radio Summit and there is no better time for media professionals to partner with the state government for the development of the ecosystem’, he said

Penpushing also reports that, Founder of Rise Network Toyosi Akerele-Ogunsiji in her remarks urged Nigerians to create local Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions, emphasizing ethical innovation and regulation to govern AI’s rapid adoption and stressed Artificial Intelligence (AI’s) role in democratising media and building trust.

The Programs Director of Nigeria Media Innovation Program Adedeji Adekunle highlighted the necessity of leveraging this technology while ensuring the protection of intellectual property, congratulating Women Radio on the development of NIMI Artificial Intelligence (AI) host, and recognised the innovative strides being made in the industry.

Penpushing reports that the Programs Director of Nigeria Media Innovation Program stressed that human oversight is crucial in Artificial Intelligence (AI) integration to maintain trust and prevent potential pitfalls associated with automation.

The Business Program Manager at Microsoft (Nigeria/Ghana) Stellamaris Okebu spoke on Artificial Intelligence (AI’s) efficiency in streamlining tasks, which she described as essential for the future and equally highlighted Artificial Intelligence (AI’s) capabilities in audience analysis, trend tracking, and real-time interactions.

Penpushing further reports that the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Consulting Engineer at Vault Hill and developer of Nimi Artificial Intelligence (AI) Tayo Kalejaiye applauded Women Radio for this feat despite challenges faced in building Nimi

The General Manager of Women Radio Oghenevwairhe Ofigo, alongside colleagues Esther Alaribe Programmes Manager, Abigail Abadom administrator and Taiwo Adeleye programs officer demonstrated practical applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools used at Women Radio to enhance programming, improve audience interaction, and streamline operations

Penpushing also reports that Kayode Okikiolu of Channels Television during a panel discussion on Artificial Intelligence (AI) Enhancing Journalism and Broadcasting: Ethics and Professionalism, questioned the stance of National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) on Artificial Intelligence (AI) citing public skepticism.

The journalist stressed the need for National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to be involved in discussions about Artificial Intelligence (AI) and raised concerns about balancing investments in Artificial Intelligence(AI) with prioritizing staff welfare and equally advocated for collaboration among radio stations to find solutions.

Penpushing reports that Nabilah Usman of RadioNow delved into the regulatory landscape of Artificial Intelligence (AI) usage in Nigeria, questioning lawmakers’ positions and called for strict regulations to prevent the malicious use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), and suggested that violations be treated as criminal acts to ensure accountability and ethical AI practices.

The Managing Director of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Academy for Beginners, Sam Onigbanjo highlighted the rapid evolution of Artificial Intelligence (AI), noting the benefits of transitioning from free to paid versions of AI systems in creating advanced articles and advertisements. He underscored the necessity of combining creativity with technology to maximize Artificial Intelligence (AI’s) potential

Penpushing further reports that Motunrayo Alaka of Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism expressed concerns about journalism ethics, affirming credibility as the profession’s unique value and noted that Artificial Intelligence (AI) improves with human usage and encouraged journalists to upskill.

The participant addressing challenges in struggling democracies, stressed the need for accountability from authorities when using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and advocated for rules of fairness and credibility. She highlighted the importance of trust as a critical ethical consideration.

Penpushing also reports that the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Radio Summit Nigeria 2024, which had innovators, media experts, and broadcasters in attendance, is an initiative of Women Radio 91.7FM, in collaboration with the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) and supported by the Voice Women Empowerment Foundation.
