The Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri has declared that the late military dictator, General Sanni Abacha was a great benefactor for the citizens of the state, adding that Bayelsains and other residents will forever remain grateful to him.

Penpushing reports that Diri made the declaration of acknowledging Abacha at the opening ceremony of the Nigeria Guild of Editors (NGE) Conference held at DSP Alamieyeseigha Memorial Banquet Hall, Yenagoa, the state capital.

The Governor who was the Chief Host at the conference while buttressing his claim emphasized that if not for the late military head of state, Bayelsa state will not exist, stressing that for this singular act in creation of the state the deceased remain a hero.

Penpushing further reports that Diri said the late military ruler may mean different thing to some people, but for the Bayelsa citizens and residents he was a great army general, pointing out that there are leaders who have done the worst things and they are still there.

The Governor stated that if not for the late Abacha creating Balyesa state, the conference of Nigeria Guild of Editors (NGE) being held would not have been made possible, if the state does not exist in the country

‘Before today, Bayelsa State had just a single lane, the miracle is the creation of Bayelsa State by the late Sani Abacha.  Again and again, let me use this opportunity to acknowledge General Sani Abacha. He may mean a different thing to some other people, but for us from Bayelsa State, he was a great General ”

‘There are leaders who have done the worst things and they are still there If it was not for Abacha, Nigeria Guild of Editors would not be having this conference here today’, the Governor emphasised

Penpushing also reports that Diri speaking further called on need to revive technical education, pointing out that clamour for Degree certificates has been responsible for high rate of unemployment, particularly among the youths in the country.

The Governor stated that it was unfortunate that focus on technical education has been lost, stressing that it remain the most profitable, and open up individual skills and talents of the youths and thereby creating employment on their own

Penpushing reports that he said technical education provides opportunity to become employer of labour, rather than struggling and clamouring for white collar job, stressing that technical education open door of success.

The Governor disclosed that his administration has embarked on proactive revival of technical education with provision of schools with well-equipped facilities, explaining that the education is also free, as well as providing free uniforms for the students
