The 41st coach of the Nigerian national team, the Super Eagles, Finidi George has resigned barely one month after being unveiled as the manager of the team, a development which portray his era as one of the shortest in the history of the team.

Penpushing reports that Finidi who spent 20 months as assistant to coach José Santos Peseiro before the Portuguese voluntarily left the post following the conclusion of the Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire, confirmed his resignation on Saturday

The resigned coach was first engaged in an interim capacity during two friendly matches in Morocco in April, while his team defeated Ghana 2-1 in the first match, ending an 18-year winless streak against the Black Stars, but then lost 0-2 to Mali in the second game.

Penpushing further reports that Finidi was in April finally offered the job, an appointment which was criticised by some people who felt he was not good enough for the task, while his critics were proved right as the Super Eagles failed to win either of their World Cup qualifying matches handled by him.

The Super Eagles it is recalled rescued a 1-1 draw against South Africa, and were stunned 2-1 by lowly rated Benin Republic in Abidjan, and thereafter, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFA) has announced it would employ an expatriate technical adviser in the coming weeks.

Penpushing also reports that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFA) move was said might have been reason for the registration of Finidi, a former Ajax star and a member of the apt-styled ‘Golden Generation’ that won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Tunisia.

The team equally emerged as the second most entertaining team in Nigeria’s debut at the Federation International Football Association (FIFA) World Cup finals in the United States of America (USA) the same year.

Penpushing reports that Finidi won 62 caps for Nigeria, including featuring at the 1994 and 1998 Federation International Football Association (FIFA) World Cup finals, also won gold, silver, and bronze medals from the 1992, 1994, 2000, and 2002 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments.

The former coach before taking the national team job, was in a charge of Enyimba International in the Nigeria Premier Football League, and won the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title in his second season with the People’s Elephant.
