Ten passengers were killed in a lone traffic accident involving a DAF trailer carrying 172 male on the Abuja-Kaduna expressway, and accident attributed to excessive speed, overloading and fatigue on the part of the driver.
Penpushing reports that the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Public Education Officer, Jonas Agwu, confirmed the incident said in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), adding that the crash occurred on Monday.
The statement explained that the driver lost control of the wheels and crashed into a ditch at about 10:30 a.m. with 172 male passengers aboard the trailer, adding that aside from 10 deaths recorded 48 sustained injuries.
Penpushing further reports that Agwu said the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) rescue team evacuated the victims to St. Anthony and Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Hospitals in Kaduna, stressing that efforts are ongoing by the operatives to follow up on the injured victims in the hospitals to ensure they receive necessary medical attention.
The Public Education Officer quoted the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Corps Marshal, Dauda Ali-Biu, as urging sector commanders to strengthen nationwide enforcement and advocacy campaigns against speeding, overloading and reckless driving.
Penpushing also reports that the Corps Marshal ordered that sector commanders in ensuring the need to caution trailer drivers against conveying human beings on top of goods in their vehicles, and equally directed them to commence result-oriented patrol operations with mobile courts along critical corridors, with immediate effect.
