The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crimes (UNODIC) in collaboration with the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has concluded plans on a training workshop to strengthen the capacity of their members to fight and demystify human trafficking in Nigeria

Penpushing reports that towards this, the bodies have invited States’ Task Forces on the Prohibition of human trafficking across Nigeria for a training workshop scheduled to hold in Abuja, Federal Capital Territory(FCT)

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crimes (UNODIC), against a report by the United States(US) Department of States, labelling Nigeria a Tier 2 country  which is yet to put the minimum standards required for the elimination of human trafficking in place has stepped up its collaborative efforts with National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) to train the operatives of the agency in the States Task Forces  with a view to meeting the challenges associated with the Crimes.

Penpushing further reports that a five-day Bootcamp learning for members of the States Task Forces on human trafficking begins on Monday 31st through Friday 4th August, where besides the review of the State Task Forces activities since inception, members would be updated on the modus operandi of human traffickers and impacted with the strategies to counter their operations.

The traditional ruler of Akinale of Owu Kingdom, Egbaland Oba Olufemi Ogunleye, representing the traditional institution in the Ogun State Task Force is leading the Ogun State delegates to the training session.

Penpushing also reports that the Director General of National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Professor Fatima Waziri-Azi has assured Nigerians that despite the frightening global statistics on the prevalence of human trafficking across the world as released through the 2023 Global Slavery Index, Nigeria is better poised to control and tackle human trafficking due to the collaborative efforts”.

Meanwhile, the launch of a compendium of good practices for the State Task Forces, designed to enhance the capacity of members in combating trafficking in Persons in Nigeria, which is the outcome of series of interactive meetings between the states Task Forces and international sponsors to stem the tide of human trafficking in Nigeria, will take place at the event.
