The outgoing Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday received a parting gift from the Governors of the South-East Region of the country as the Second Niger Bridge was named after him at the commissioning.
Penpushing reports that sources disclosed that the Governors unanimously took the decision ahead of the commissioning of the project to appreciate Buhari for completing the project after successive administrations failed to do so.
The media aide of the President, Tolu Ogunlesi on his verified Twitter handle on Tuesday posted, emphasized that following consultations the Governors of the South-East have agreed that the second Niger Bridge shall be named after the Muhammadu Buhari .
Penpushing further reports that in similar vein, a Special Assistant to the President on Digital Communications Bashir Ahmad, announced that the bridge has been named after Buhari, whose tenure ends May 29, 2023.
The media aide to Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State, Ejimofor Opara added that Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Babatunde Fashola, announced the bridge’s new name during the commissioning of the project, explaining that the decision to rename the bridge after Buhari was taken by the Governors from the South-East.
Penpushing also reports that the construction of the bridge which spans from Asaba in Delta State, South-South Nigeria to Ozubulu, Ogbaru and other communities in Anambra State, South-East Nigeria began on 1st September 2018
The record, however, has it that the first Niger Bridge, linking Onitsha and Asaba, was completed in 1965 and built by the French construction company, Dumez.
Penpushing reports that the five Governors responsible for approving renaming the bridge after Buhari include Charles Soludo (Anambra), Dave Umahi (Ebonyi), Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi Enugu), Hope Uzodinma (Imo) and Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia).
