2023: Nigerian journalists to engage female political candidates on good governance

The United Nations (UN) Women in collaboration with Canadian Government and WFM radio station will on Monday, December 5,2022  bring together female candidates with  Nigerian journalists in Borno State to forge a synergy in forging gender inclusivity in  political governance in Nigeria
Penpushing reports that the gathering is a follow up to a resolution reached at  a parley of  media executives  recently held in Lagos State,while the workshop which is the first engagement will  hold at Amada International Hotel, Maiduguri, the Borno State Capital with sixteen female political candidates as participants
Penpushing further reports that, the engagement is jointly funded  by United Nations (UN) and Canadian Government, as well as Women Advocates Research and Documentation Centre (WARDC) joint organiser.
The United Nations(UN) Women, it is recalled have geared up efforts to equip women candidates in the 2023 general elections with the skills needed to achieve required visibility.
Penpushing also reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission,(INEC), at a program indicated  that only 12 women were among the 287 candidates contesting for the Governorship, National and House of Assembly elections in Borno State.
The commission disclosed that they  are Fatima Abubakar, the only Governorship candidate under the African Democratic Congress, (ADC), and Maryam Tijjani the only female Senatorial candidate under the  Accord Party (AP).
The others  as contained in the commission list include a member of the Green chamber, Zainab Gimba of the All Progressive Congress(APC) who  is  seeking re-election into Bama/Ngala/Kala-Balge Federal Constituency, while two other women, Aisha Adamu and Hauwa Abdulrahman are contesting for House of Representatives under Social Democratic Party(SDP) Damboa/Gwoza/Chibok and African Democratic Congress(ADC) Jere constituencies respectively.
Penpushing  reports that the commission list showed that only seven women are among the 193 candidates running for the 28 State House of Assembly elections,and they include: Falmata Saidu of the ADP for Bama II; Bintu Kyari of the ADM for Mobbar state constituency, Dada Tanko of the ADP for Shani state constituency, Hajja Rukkayya of ADP for Dikwa state constituency, and Zainab Ali of APM for Maiduguri state constituency, while Aisha Abdulkadir and Aisha Nyako are contesting election for Marte and Maiduguri state constituencies under the platforms of APP and YPP, respectively.
