The Global Support for Kids Initiative on Tuesday joined the world to celebrate the International Day of the Girl –Child, a ceremony held at the Trinity High School, Ijaye Abeokuta, Ogun State Capital, and had in attendance number of female students as participants.

Penpushing reports that, the Executive Director of Global Support for Kid’s Initiative, Opeyemi Olowokere in his welcome  speech emphaised that children below the age of 18 years have the right to survival, development, protection in other to accomplish their God-given potentials.

The Director represented by Abiola Oyefeso explained that every child has right to basic life which include right to education, good health, right to life, freedom of association, right to communicate and right to leisure and recreation among others

‘A child is every humanbeing below the age of 18. Child rights are claims that all children below the age of 18 years have to survival, development, protection, participation and accomplish their God-given potentials” she said.

Penpushing furthers report that, Olowokere noted that protection for children especially in difficult circumstances deserve special care to reduce the life threatening stress in their lives, noting that the United Nations (UN) on the rights of the child was adopted by the General Assembly on the 30th of November, 1989 in order to improve the quality of life for children world

‘UNICEF organized a world summit for children on 29-30 September 1990 at UN headquarters in New York. The world summit further popularized the UN Convention on the right of the child. It is on record as the most widely ratified international treat’

Penpushing also reports that, Commissioner for Women Affairs, Funmilayo Efuwape in her speech expressed the importance and need to focus on challenges facing the girls, and address those challenges headlong

The Commissioner represented  by Mrs Bisola Ngbo, note that girls across the globe still face unprecedented challenges in education, physical and mental wellness, stressing on urgent need to invest on them for better future

‘ “Yet many campaigns have continually been led to echo that girls should be given opportunities to lead by putting them in the forefront of change efforts, hearing their voices, responding to their questions and welcoming them in decision making spaces. This is a way to invest in a future that believes in girl-child’, she said.
