Cholera outbreak has hit facility where former Boko Haram fighters are being camped at the Kosheri camp along the Maiduguri-Dikwa road, in Borno State Capital, with at  least two people confirmed dead and many other occupants said to have fallen ill   from the disease.

Penpushing reports that, Borno State Government source confirmed the development, adding that those on danger list as a result of the outbreak are as at the time of filing this report undergoing treatment.

The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Zuwaira Gambo said only two deaths have been recorded in the camp, while contrary to that, a source at the camp, who is a healthcare worker claimed that the death from the disease was up to 20, which was said to have started on Friday.

“I can confirm to you that the crisis started on Friday when 14 persons died, another six occupants died on Saturday’ the source, a healthcare worker, who asked not to be named for security reasons’, emphasised.

The Borno State Government in reaction insisted that, only two persons died among those that were diagnosed to have suffered from the cholera outbreak, adding others have been evacuated as at the time of this report

“Only two persons died among those that were diagnosed to have suffered from the cholera outbreak at Kosher camp. Other persons diagnosed with cholera have been evacuated and taken to where they would be quarantined”, the Commissioner said.

Penpushing also reports that, as at the time of filing this report, the identity of the dead occupants could not be ascertained, while the commissioner in further response explained that everyone concerned at the ministry of health has been mobilized to the camp to contain the situation.

The Borno government, it is recalled  recently opened two more camps to accommodate the increasing number of surrendering terrorists, while record has it that, Kosheri camp, where the cholera outbreak was reported, is one of the camps opened to decongest the main Hajj camp.
