The residents of number of communities which include Lambar Tureta located in Tureta Local Government Area of Sokoto State have embarked on a protest over incessant attacks by the bandits

Penpushing reports that, the protesters blocked the federal highway linking Zamfara with Sokoto and Kebbi States, while a source pointed out that the attacks have escalated in recent weeks, adding that as at the time of filing this report, the bandits were sighted on motorcycles crossing over to Shagari town.

“Even yesterday, we saw them on several motorcycles crossing over to the Shagari town side. Villages are constantly attacked at will by the bandits with no or little from the security agents,” Lawali Tureta, resident said.

Penpushing further reports that,  a former staffer of Government Secondary School Lambar Tureta said  security agents take too long before responding to calls for help during attacks, explaining that the youths of the town decided to block the road to attract the government’s response to their call for help.

The source added that, motorists going to Sokoto or Kebbi States were forced to wait for several hours while others had to shelve their journey, while another resident of the community, Attahiru Salihu, explained that  he joined the protest in solidarity with the suffering of the people.

“Even yesterday around 1 a.m. bandits attacked a hamlet just outside our town, killed some of the people there and abducted many. Yet there was no response from the authority concerned”, he said

Penpushing also reports that, a Medical Doctor, Tijjani Sulaiman who was resuming work in Sokoto from Talata Mafara Local Government Area of Zamfara State, stated he was alerted by someone  before he got stuck in the traffic caused by the protest.

“I left my home town Talata Mafara, around 6:10 a.m. and reached Lambar Tureta, where I found all the road blocked, with smoke coming everywhere from the road, and environ’,Sulaiman said.

“I kept moving to the centre of the scenario to confirm exactly what was going on, and why the road was blocked? Then I heard a voice from one resident saying “there’s no road for you Malam, better go bypass and follow Bush to take you out,” he said.

Penpushing reports that, as at the time of filing this report, Sokoto Police Command Public Relations Officer, Sanusi Abubakar, was yet to make any comment or issued any official statement over the development.
