A staff with Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) Abeokuta and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) expert, Engr Olumayo Idowu has came top of the five best capstone projects, Harnessing Digital Technology in Broadcasting

Penpushing reports that, the project is designed to effect positive change in Nigeria’s public service with the audit Committee member of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), and Idowu showed brilliance and excellence among 49 officers of the Nigerian Public Service taken through 6 months of executive education.

The course sponsored by, Aig-Imoukhuede Foundation, in partnership with the University of Oxford’s Blavatnik School of Government, with his (Idowu) capstone project  adjudged among the best selected 5 for the programme.

Penpushing further reports, that Idowu’s feat attracted the Nigerian Government and was hosted alongside other selected participants by the Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential villa in Abuja.

The Vice President in his remarks, while appreciating Idowu and other 48 graduands, re-affirmed that Nigeria needs to develop well-trained, knowledgeable and well-motivated public servants for effective service delivery and excellent performance.

Penpushing also reports that, Osinbajo pointed out that it is vital to provide cutting-edge training to public servants noting that once public goods cannot be delivered effectively, development suffers, adding that the commons are all at risk and the overall quality of life of the people is undermined.”

The Vice President on the essence of developing Nigeria’s human resources, especially in the public sector stated that, noted that government at all levels have never been short of ideas, policies or roadmaps

“Our governments have never been short of ideas, policies or roadmaps. Indeed, we have some of the best written and most insightful policies on practically all issues…but we sometimes fall flat on implementation. The reason is the quality of the human resources that we deploy in the public sector’, he explained.

Penpushing reports that, he commended the programme’s curriculum on strengthening public organizations, especially the question of goal setting, values and gauging criteria for high performance.

The Vice President noted that these were equally important as the public service, especially regulatory agencies, generally tend to see their roles as policing or revenue generation, emphasizing that their real role must be how to make life easier for the private sector, small and large businesses, individuals, those who create the jobs, create wealth and lift millions out of poverty, stressing that high performance must then be determined by fidelity to those values.

Penpushing further reports that, former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Muhammadu Sanusi II while giving a special address at the event charged the participants to ensure they understand why they have been appointed and put all they have learnt to work.

The former Governor of the apex bank stated that the future and growth of Nigeria does not necessarily lie in the hands of politicians but civil servants, stressing that any public servant who does not know his role cannot make impact.

Penpushing also reports that, Chairman, Aig-Imoukhuede Foundation, Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede in his remarks, described the programme as a unique executive education programme which aimed at building the capability and effectiveness of public servants in Nigeria.

“The Aig-Imoukhuede foundation believes that if adequate investment is channelled into building the capacity of public servants in Nigeria and indeed Africa, we will close the gap between Africa and the rest of the world. In addition to this programme, we offer scholarships to public servants. We are ready to collaborate with the government and others to make an impact,” he said.

Penpushing reports that, he noted that the participants are already engineering some level of changes in their various institutions with the innovative projects they have designed such as; improving organisational effectiveness through digitization, elimination of bias in recruitment of staff into the aviation sector, strengthening government response to financial crimes through PPP, among several others.

The President Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Engr. T.S.G. Wudil, while receiving Idowu in his office commended him for being a good ambassador of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE).

Penpushing also reports that, he applauded Idowu  for his capstone project which was adjudged among the best selected 5 for the programme, urging him to put all he has learnt to work, while pointing that the future and growth of Nigeria depends on the quality of leadership in public sector.
